AI governance is not simply a policy-writing role. The leader must help the organization use AI responsibly while turning broad principles into decisions, controls, and behaviors people can follow.
The role often sits between legal, compliance, risk, cybersecurity, data, technology, and business operations. That makes influence and translation just as important as technical or regulatory knowledge.
Start with the organization’s real need
“AI governance leader” can describe very different mandates. One organization may need to inventory existing tools and stop unmanaged use. Another may need a formal governance framework, product-review process, model-risk controls, or an enterprise adoption strategy.
Before launching the search, clarify the decision rights, reporting line, geographic scope, and level of authority. Candidates cannot be evaluated fairly against an undefined mandate.
Capabilities worth assessing
- Governance design: building proportionate policies, roles, approval paths, and monitoring processes.
- Risk translation: explaining privacy, bias, security, reliability, and third-party risk in practical business language.
- Cross-functional leadership: aligning stakeholders whose incentives and technical vocabulary differ.
- Implementation discipline: moving from principles to inventories, assessments, controls, metrics, and evidence.
- Change management: helping employees understand acceptable use and adopt new expectations.
Use scenarios during interviews
Ask how the candidate would respond if employees were entering proprietary information into public AI tools, if a vendor could not explain its model controls, or if business leaders wanted to move faster than the review process allowed.
The strongest candidates will avoid both extremes: blocking every use and approving innovation without adequate oversight. They will show how to classify risk, escalate decisions, document reasoning, and improve the process over time.
A credible AI governance leader protects the organization without making responsible innovation impossible.
